Prepping for a Home Renovation

Taking on a home renovation project can seem like a massive job, but with the right preparation, you can have an easy experience when it comes to changing your home to suit your style. If you want to get your home ready for the home renovation contractors to do their job, here are some of the things you'll want to take care of before the project starts.

Clearing a Path
The first task you should complete is clearing a path for the contractors and subcontractors to work. This doesn't only apply to the room that is being worked on, but any area from the door where they will enter to the room where they work, plus a path for them to get to the bathroom. Renovations are often messy, so simply laying plastic or painting tarps down on the floor can prevent mess and damage from this temporary traffic.

Removing Breakable and Irreplaceable Items
Within the workspace and along the path that you can created for the workers, you will want to evaluate what you have there and what you should remove before the project begins. Although the contractors won't purposely break or damage your items, these things sometimes happen when bringing in materials and supplies for the renovation project. If you know that you cannot replace an item and it is somewhat delicate, it is best to remove it from the work area so you won't have to worry about it.

Preparing for Disruption
Once the area is prepped, you will have to do a little self preparation to get used to all of the disruption that the renovation project may cause you and your family. If you are renovating your kitchen, for example, you will have to find other ways to feed your family such as eating out or using a microwave in another room.

Pets can also be an issue. If you have a pet it may be best to find a place they can stay during the renovation project. This will ensure that you pet stays safe and there are no distractions to the work crew.

These are just some of the preparations you can make before you start a home renovation project. Completing these before the project can help you keep your mind at ease and keep your home functional throughout the process.

Smarter Ways To Save

Did you know that at least 60% of Americans don't have emergency savings? Be sure you are not one of those...and there are no dumb ways to save!

  1. This might work for your kids if they would ask for a candy in the checkout line. Say "how about you guys wait 15 minutes until we get home for a snack and that $$$ will go in your Disney savings jar?" :)
  2. Just imagine your laundry room is coin-operated and keep a can by the washer, then try charging yourself  2 bucks every single load. It can soon fill up, then bank it. If it happens that an appliance breaks unexpectedly, you can use it as an emergency fund to help you cover the cost.
  3. When doing your grocery, try the technique of organizing your bought items on the conveyor belt at the register arranging them with the most expensive items at the back. You can track the total easily and can pluck the items off at the back if you're almost up to your budget.
  4. Research shows that it is harder to spend 20-50 $bills from our wallet than when you have 5's and 1's. So, when you withdraw cash, choose to get them in higher denominations...the bigger the bills, the less likely you want to spend them.
  5. Usually most people receiving text messages reminding them to save can work effectively. Check your bank if it has a free text message service that can ping you updates on your account balance.
  6. Whenever possible, if you are with a group of friends having meals or concerts, offer to pay the total cost using your card, then ask them to pay you back in cash. That would be like a secret savings account!
  7. Practice DIY in dying your hair and having mani-pedi yourself. You could then put the tip money you would have given to your hair stylist or manicurist in your savings instead.
  8. Bring back the piggybank savings model...except that instead of filling it with coins, use dollar bills clogging up your wallet. If you do this all year, you can save enough for your holiday shopping.

Watch That Hygiene...

The question: "should you wash new clothes especially new underwears you bought before wearing them?"

The answer: Although most of the clothes or items look brand new and fresh, most of them has had a germ-filled life before it reaches your closet. Remember, some clothes had probably gone on and off in fitting rooms in which clothing would become good place for skin cells that may contain antibiotic-resistant bacteria like MRSA.

So, always toss them in the washer to play safe, particularly if you bought new underwears and swimsuits.

Your Smart Phone Can Be A Health Hazard

Although there are still no confirmed studies  about evidences that cell phones can cause cancer to humans, some science reports suggest that electromagnetic radiation coming from a cell phone antenna can trigger a brain glucose increase in the head area closest to where the cell phone is held. But if you want to avoid or minimize your exposure until all the evidences are officially confirmed, there are still proven safety tips that you can follow:

  • If you are having calls, use the speaker phone setting or wired hands-free device instead of getting direct contact to your ears during the call. But wireless bluetooth devices don't mean to eliminate the exposure though.

  • A cell phone's radiation exposure tend to be high when your phone's signal is weak or when you're traveling in a fast moving train or car. It's because the phone needs to reconnect to new towers. It should be safer to wait until you have at least 3 or more bars of signal strength before you make a call.

  • Younger kids' skulls are thinner than adults, the reason why they are more highly at risk in radiation exposure when they hold their phones to their ears during a call. Encourage them to text.

Is It Safe To Eat That?

Cheese:
If you see moldy parts of hard cheese (such as Parmesan, cheddar or Swiss), it is safe to eat it after removing the moldy portion at least about an inch around it. But watch out and beware of fuzzy -dd-colored spots on soft cheeses like goat or cottage cheese, as well as for yogurt and fruits. Molds of blue cheeses are safe to eat but go by the use-by date.

Chicken/Meats:
While pinkish poultry or meat can actually be considered thoroughly cooked, while browned beef and white chicken could be too undercooked, color and texture are NOT reliable ways to tell if they are safe for E. coli or salmonella which cause flulike symptoms.
The only way to tell it is by using a meat thermometer. In order to kill bacteria cook any poultry to a 165F heat; 160F for pork and ground meat and 145F for steaks.

Refreezing Meat:
You can still safely refreeze them as long as they have still ice crystals or at least haven't warmed to higher than 40F. It is safer to thaw them in the fridge as it takes longer than leaving them on the counter, so if you plan to cook them the night before, transfer the meat from the freezer to fridge. If it happened you forgot to refreeze it that day, it should only be good for 1-2 days in the fridge.

Milk:
Milk if properly stored should be safe to drink for 5-7 days after the sell-by date. This is the last day the store should display them. But once it reaches your fridge, follow the use-by day which is the last day the item will be at its optimal taste and texture. If it smells sour, toss it away!

Tips For Choosing Your Best Pastel-Colored Jeans

Are you fond of using light colored-jeans, and yet you are not sure how good does it fit you, or you're not sure what type of cut is good for you? The following might help you as a guide ;).

If you have a curvy rear; - choose jeans with contoured waistline, - higher in the back than in front.

If you have a boyish figure; - get a super-stretch material which enhances your curves and never gets baggy.

If you have a pear shape; - look for an extra-hold shapewear fabric which is designed to make your bottom half look a whole size smaller.

Light colored jeans should be worn sleek and simple. Avoid contrast stitching and go for short or false front pockets. Back pockets should start at the outer edge of your cheeks and are as big as your hand because they look more bum-friendly!
